The Story Behind Wander
To truly understand Wander with Willow is to understand that it has always been about something deeper than the animals themselves, it is about what they awaken in us.
Our two short documentary films, Between Worlds and The Wild Within, explore our life alongside wolfdogs—the profound connection we have found with these animals, the ways they have drawn us closer to nature, and how they have challenged us to step outside expectations and reconnect with something simpler, wilder and more instinctive.
Together, these films offer a glimpse into the deeper “why” behind Wander With Willow: why we believe so deeply in these animals, why we have chosen to build our lives alongside them, and why preserving that connection remains at the heart of everything we do.

It began with Willow.
Before there was a breeding program, there was Willow; a wolfdog who changed the direction of my life forever.
My journey with wolfdogs began in 2013. What started as a connection with one extraordinary animal grew into years of learning, traveling and sharing everyday life with these intelligent, sensitive beings. Long before establishing the Wander breeding program in 2020, those experiences were shaping everything it would eventually become.
My relationship with Willow felt deeply soulful, at times spiritual. A connection that goes beyond our time on earth. Earning her trust taught me to slow down, listen beyond words and appreciate a connection that developed on its own terms. She taught me so much and shaped me into who I am today. Life alongside wolfdogs continues to teach me about patience, presence and respecting each animal’s individuality. Those are lessons I carry into how we raise and care for our dogs, and connections I hope our families have the opportunity to discover for themselves.
Willow remains the heart of Wander. Through Phoenix, Bane, and her descendants, Willow’s legacy continues alongside the complementary bloodlines we have thoughtfully welcomed into our program. Honoring her means carrying forward both the qualities we treasured in her and the care, understanding, freedom, and respect she taught us.
The Wander Signature
One of a kind faces. Unique coats. Balanced, graceful movement. A look that feels almost otherworldly.
People who meet our dogs often tell us they look as though they stepped out of a fairytale.
That distinctive combination of features is something we have thoughtfully worked toward across generations. We call it the Wander Signature.
It reflects years of selecting pairings, watching puppies mature and learning which qualities carry forward from one generation to the next. Every dog remains unmistakably an individual, yet there is often a recognizable thread connecting them.
But some of the most meaningful things people tell us have little to do with appearance. They tell us about intelligence. mischief. independence. the personalities they fall in love with and the depth of the relationships they build together.
We recognize that feeling in our own lives.
The beauty may draw you in, but knowing the individual dog is what gives that beauty meaning.
We value curiosity, sensitivity, independence and connection. Each wolfdog carries a different balance of those qualities, and lasting trust develops through patience, understanding, and shared experience.
That is the part of the Wander Signature that cannot simply be captured in a photograph.
More than a Breeding Program…
What makes Wander With Willow different has never been one dog, one pairing, or one generation.
It is the result of years spent living alongside these animals, learning from them, traveling with them, raising generations of them, and understanding the delicate balance between the wildness that makes a wolfdog extraordinary and the temperament that allows one to share a life with people.
Our puppies are raised within our lives. From their earliest weeks, they receive thoughtful socialization, desensitization, and age-appropriate exposure to the world around them.
Because our dogs are first and foremost our companions, not simply breeding animals. We have the opportunity to know them deeply, observe how each generation matures, and allow what we learn to inform the generations that follow.
Over the years, families and breeding programs have come to Wander With Willow from across the United States and around the world. They are not simply searching for a particular appearance or wolf percentage. They are seeking a lineage, a philosophy and the years of intentional work behind it.
We have always felt there is something ancient and deeply soulful about these animals…as though they carry something with them that we cannot entirely explain. Sharing your life with one has a way of teaching you patience, presence and a different kind of connection.
That is part of the journey we invite our families to discover for themselves.
At the heart of everything we do is connection. Our dogs are intertwined with our lives. They live beside us, travel with us and explore with us. Adventure isn’t simply something beautiful we photograph; it is one of the ways we build confidence, deepen our relationships and allow these extraordinary animals to experience the world alongside us.
We hope to create the kind of dog that makes you stop when you see them, and becomes unforgettable once you know them.
Above all, we want our dogs to experience full and meaningful lives: connected to their people, immersed in the world around them and able to explore the wild places where both they-and we-seem to come most alive.
The Wander With Willow signature is something you can see…but more importantly, something you can feel.
A Legacy Carried Forward
What began here with us more than a decade ago has grown into something that reaches far beyond our own home.
Dogs born and raised at Wander have become deeply loved companions and have contributed to breeding programs in other countries around the world. There is something incredibly meaningful about seeing a lineage that began here continue through dogs, families and future generations in places far beyond us.
With that legacy comes responsibility.
Every generation is approached thoughtfully, considering health, temperament, structure, genetic diversity, ancestry and the individual qualities each dog may contribute. My studies in animal science and genetics at UC Davis complement more than a decade of hands-on experience living with wolfdogs, raising puppies and watching generations of our dogs mature.
Through thoughtful selection, we continue refining the balance of wolf ancestry, Alaskan Malamute, German Shepherd and other Nordic breeds represented within our lines. Our goal has never been to create dogs that simply look extraordinary. We want the qualities beneath that appearance—the intelligence, affection, confidence, individuality and connection—to be just as memorable.
And while genetics create the foundation, the way a puppy experiences its first weeks of life matters tremendously. Our puppies grow up within our world, surrounded by people, animals and new experiences to help build the foundation they will carry with them into their future homes.
But our responsibility to them does not end there.
Choosing a puppy means choosing a family member who may share many years of your life. We want you to understand the dog behind the photograph, their history, personality, needs and the generations that came before them.
That understanding guides the way we get to know prospective families, discuss the realities of living with a wolfdog and help determine which puppy or pairing may be suited to the life you hope to share.
And when one of our puppies leaves Wander, we don’t consider that the end of their story. It is simply the beginning of the part that belongs to you.
We remain a resource for our families throughout their dogs’ lives, and there is no greater continuation of this legacy than seeing the animals we have loved and raised become an irreplaceable part of someone else’s family.
From Willow, to the generations that followed, to the families who carry them forward; the legacy continues.
